Radio Stations In Halifax
Even with the addition of two radio stations in Nova Scotia, there is still a huge gap in the music we tune our car radios in to. The selection is very limited and the stations play the same songs over and over again. Radio used to have the market beat on local talent, but unless you have sold an "x" amount of CD's you can not get a break.
Local bands and artists have moved on to the internet to create their own fan base which is a shame. Having a global audience is great but unless they can have a concert where people want to see them they will not make any money. In Halifax our selection of radio includes:
1) C100 fm - 100.1 - top 40 hits of mainly slow music
2) Q104 - 104.3 - oldies music
3) Hal Fm - 89.9 - more oldies music
4) Z103 - 103.5 - hip hop and dance music
5) Sun Fm - 97.5 - slow songs from all decades
6) Country - 101.9 - top country hits
Nova Scotians are sheltered from the great underground scene on all of these stations. Even worse is the fact that we are sheltered from genres of music. I recently learned about a style called Ska which has been around since the 60's.
The music scene in Nova Scotia is rich with many styles for all types of listeners. It is currently mandatory for stations to play a percentage of their songs by Canadian artists. This has been reserved for the likes of Avril Lavine, Shania Twain and Nickleback. Nova Scotians need to learn more about the songs being created in their own back yard.

There are many great local artists and it's a pity people don't pay more attention to them but your lucky in Halifax up here in Miramichi we just have one radio station.
Hey I grew up in this city and I am glad to at least finally be able to listen to rap music (besides The Fresh Pricne Will Smith)on the radio. It has taken a long time for this city to get music from this century.
